CARE USA fights root causes of poverty in the world’s poorest communities. Last year we supported more than 870 projects that reached more than 45 million people. CARE places a special focus on working alongside women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help their families and entire communities escape poverty.

In Sudan, ongoing violence has killed more than 70,000 people and forced nearly 2 million more from their homes — some 70 percent of them are women and children.

CARE is one of the major humanitarian organizations responding to the crisis. In addition to managing displacement camps along the Chad-Sudan border, we're working with partners throughout the area to:
* Deliver food, blankets, water containers and other important survival items to more than 400,000 people per month in north, south and west Darfur
* Provide water and latrines for approximately 265,000 people
* Operate two mobile health clinics treating roughly 800 people per week
* Strengthen civilian protection services
* Provide lifesaving assistance to more than 80,000 refugees in four camps in Chad

Even under the best conditions, life in Sudan is difficult. With an initial focus on agriculture and health care projects, CARE has been working in the country since 1979. CARE is cautiously optimistic about the recent peace agreement that promises to bring an end to the violence in Darfur. But years of conflict have left the country impoverished and divided. A tremendous amount of work lies ahead to help people return safely to their homes and attain a decent quality of life.
