Detailed Description:
Who We Are?

Affiliated with America’s Second Harvest, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States and founded in 1992, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia secures food which would otherwise typically be wasted and distributes it to non-profit agencies who serve members of the community who are in need. Our Mission is simple; we work toward ending hunger as part of an overall community effort to alleviate poverty in our community. We do this by minimizing/eliminating hunger in northeast Georgia by developing an organized, integrated, accessible, cooperative, efficient, and effective system to acquire and distribute food which would otherwise be wasted, and by increasing individual and community awareness and action concerning hunger and poverty, their causes and potential solutions.

What We Do?

The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia serves over 250 agencies in 14 counties and partners with agencies in 8 additional counties in this area. Our partner agencies include Soup Kitchens, Food Pantries, Shelters, After School Programs, Foster Parent Associations, Churches, and other non profit organizations which serve people in need. In addition to our warehouse distribution, we operate a variety of community programs such as our Kids Cafe, Brown Bag, Mobile Pantry, Feed Sites, and Disaster Relief.

Who We Serve?

According to a 2005 study conducted by America’s Second Harvest, we serve 42,500 different people each year (7,200 different people are served each week). Of those surveyed, 79% have incomes below the official poverty level for the month prior to service, 41% of households include at least one employed adult, 36% of households report having at least one member in poor health. In addition, 31% served are under 18 years of age and 5% are under age 5, 8% are elderly, and 7% are homeless.

How We are Supported?

The Food Bank is funded with generous contributions from businesses, organizations, civic groups, and individuals that share our same mission to end hunger. We also receive support from grants and foundations as well as in kind donations of products and services. We work with local and national manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and others who donate food. We have a strong volunteer base that donates their time so that financial contributions can be spent wisely. Last year alone, we received and distributed over 4 million pounds of food and other product.

How to Help?

We are a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization registered as tax exempt with the IRS; therefore all contributions are tax deductible. For every dollar we receive, we are able to provide 14 pounds of food to those in need in our community. For every dollar that is spent, 95 cents (including the value of food) go directly to services in the community. For more information on how you can become involved please call 1-706-354-8191 or visit our website.
