We wre providing children and caregivers a new dynamic program that not only presents literacy support programming but also captures the imagination of the participants. PROJECT DESIGN: The School News Nationwide Program will draw from its experience in offering quality literacy academic enrichment services to youth, parents and adolescents. The project is designed to assist participants to obtain the skills necessary for success in the areas of literacy, academic motivation, and the acquiring of knowledge needed to become employed and pursue further education or training. Activities offered will be literacy, newspaper writing/ publishing homework assistance, English classes, technology classes, arts & crafts, cultural enrichment, mentoring, youth mediation, youth leadership development groups and community awareness during school calendar year September –June, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00am- 3:00 pm and 6:00pm- 9:00pm. We will function from 7:00am -6:00pm during summer months, and on days off during the regular school calendar. We are in partnership with the New York City Board of Education and the New York City Food Services Agency to receive breakfast and lunch and snacks during our academic period. The aim of activities offered through the program will be: To improve the literacy/ writing/ reading skills/ social, emotional and academic competencies of school-age children, parents and care givers. To focus on utilizing literacy and its components to reduce the threat of violence in schools by focusing on conflict resolution. Program activities for students will include tutoring and it accruements. Educational workshops: All participants will be geared towards academic excellence. All participants will be assessed through academic testing and will administer a post-test to establish the participant’s level of academic improvement. We will assist children in meeting the New York School academic standards. Homework Assistance: Assistance and supervision will be provided to participant to ensure that they are completing their homework assignments regarding the newspaper publication/ school assignments/ book reviews etc. Remedial education classes: One-on-one assistance on remedial reading/ writing will be available to participants who demonstrate difficulties in comprehending and completing assignments. The GED preparation program will be provided to care givers/adults to obtain their GED. English Literacy classes will be provided as a Second Language (ESL) to students and caregivers who are not fluent in the English and are unable to read. Mentoring: A mentoring program to promote increased level of comfort in their daily academic achievement will expose participants to individuals in various professions. Leadership Skills: Qualified participants will receive hands-on experiences geared towards developing their leadership skills and potential. Conflict Resolution: A peer counseling/support group will be establish, empowering participants to succeed. Participants will learn how to control their emotions and how to best settle problems without resorting to violence. They’ll also document their experience. Community Service: Youth, parents, intergenerational participants will work together in providing community service, working with churches, and the elderly. Stories will be publish in our newspaper. Literature in the Arts: Arts/Crafts, music, dance, and other recreational activities will be provided throughout the year. Financial Literacy: Participants will receive training from HSBC banking executives. They’ll learn about checking/ balancing saving for college, investments and much more. Project Evaluation Participants will be assessed upon entering the program; set individual goals i.e. book reviews, writing news article, writing stories, movie reviews, and all assigned tasks will be used as assessment tools. Their progress will be measured by the accomplishment of set goals. Participants will demonstrate improved English language and/or basic literacy skills. 90% of participant parents will advance at least one National Reporting System level. Participants will achieve knowledge in literacy, financial literacy, conducting book reviews/ writing news stories/ parents will be able to work on writing projects with children. All in aid of publishing a Newspaper. 90% of participants who identify employment as a primary reason for enrollment will develop better writing skills, learn resume writing/interviewing skills, learn financial literacy discipline, all in aid of entering the job training or become employed. Participant employment follow-up survey. The publication of a newspaper and a broadcasting production will be completed. COMMUNITY SUPPORT: Organizations, groups, and departments working with us include the administration and staff of the African American Media Network, the New York Public Library, The New York Daily News, the Net Generation of Youth, New York Police Department, Madison Square Garden, Regal Entertainment and HSBC Bank. Linkages with these entities provide SNN with unique and vital access to relevant support resources. | |
