Detailed Description: AJWS is an independent not-for-profit organization founded in 1985 to help alleviate poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the world regardless of race, religion or nationality. It breathes life into Judaism's imperative to pursue justice and helps American Jews act upon a deeply felt obligation to improve the chances for survival, economic independence and human dignity for all people.

AJWS works in partnership with local grassroots organizations to support and implement self-sustaining projects that expand basic educational opportunities, nurture civil society initiatives, improve primary medical care and health conditions, empower women, promote economic development, strengthen human rights and introduce improved methods of ecologically sound agriculture. AJWS is helping people, in some of the poorest regions of the world, to help themselves.

In general, our work breaks down into four areas.

I. DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

AJWS works in partnership with local grassroots organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. The following represent a sample of AJWS funded projects:

- Conducting 74 secret home schools for 2,800 girls in Afghanistan where, under Taliban rule, women were forbidden to work and girls forbidden an education;

- Fund women's micro-credit programs in Zimbabwe, Gaza, Peru, Nicaragua and India where community-based organizations are loaning women small sums of money to create or expand their own businesses;

- Supporting people with AIDS who are organizing in Southern Africa to create prevention education programs, expand home-based care and help individuals living with the virus; and

- Working with individuals throughout the developing world who are taking the lead in their countries to build civil society, establishing and leading grassroots organizations and advocating for changes that will benefit families.

II. SERVICE

AJWS has a deeply rooted commitment to service. We offer individuals of all ages in the Jewish community to express their obligation to those in need. AJWS volunteers:

- Bring the support of the American Jewish community directly to women, men and children in communities and villages around the world;

- Create long-term sustainable solutions that help people to become self-sufficient, train local personnel and provide technical support.

AJWS runs three service programs:

Alternative Spring Break (ASB). In collaboration with college Hillels, AJWS places students in Mexico and El Salvador for one week winter and spring breaks. The students work alongside and interact with the community and participate in daily Jewish study. On their return they continue their volunteer involvement in service and social justice projects on campus and expand their roles as community builders.

International Jewish College Corps (IJCC). The IJCC program gives Jewish college students and recent graduates a unique opportunity to do hands-on volunteer work in the developing world and Israel or Ukraine over seven weeks in the summer and in three follow up retreats. IJCC integrates global, humanitarian concerns into an evolving Jewish identity, and develops a commitment to social justice and advocacy.
Jewish Volunteer Corps (JVC). The JVC places skilled men and women, from recent college graduates to retirees, in communities and villages throughout the developing world for one month to one year. These dedicated men and women contribute their professional expertise to help improve the lives of people in need, and make tikkun olam, or the Jewish ideal of healing the world, a very real part of their own lives.

III. OUTREACH AND EDUCATION

The goal of the outreach and education department is to place social justice and service more intensely on the radar screen of the American Jewish community. They work in partnership with congregations, day schools, Hebrew schools, Hillels, and other institutions around the country to create curricula emphasizing a Jewish obligation to tikkun olam and educating younger Jews as global citizens.

IV. The Jewish Community Development Fund (JCDF)

The JCDF is dedicated to supporting grassroots Jewish renewal and human rights programs in the former Soviet Union. They make grants and send volunteers to a wide range of projects conceived and designed by local activists to strengthen their communities.
