Detailed Description: The Journal of Ordinary Thought (JOT) publishes reflections people make on their personal histories and everyday experiences.

It is founded on the proposition that, Every Person Is a Philosopher, expressing one’s thoughts fosters creativity and change, and taking control of life requires people to think about the world and communicate their thoughts to others.

JOT strives to be a vehicle for reflection, communication, and change. In 2002, the Journal of Ordinary Thought and one of our writers, Pennie Holmes-Brinson, won an Illinois Arts Council (IAC) Literary Award, for the publication of Holmes-Brinson’s short fiction, “Casey’s Story.” This marked NWA’s second IAC Literary Award in three years.

JOT is published by the Neighborhood Writing Alliance (NWA), a Chicago-based not-for-profit that believes in the power of the written word. NWA sponsors writing workshops across the city of Chicago, free and open to all adult residents. NWA publishes pieces from each writer in the award-winning Journal of Ordinary Thought (JOT). This striking publication is distributed free throughout the community and sent to paid subscribers, arts and community organizations, public policymakers and selected media. To promote and support the writers and their work, NWA hosts readings and collaborates with other arts institutions on a variety of projects and public events.

Donors of $25.00 or more receive a subscription to the Journal of Ordinary Thought. Gift subscriptions and individual issues are also available.
