In recent times, our field officers and veterinarians have saved thousands of animal lives during emergency missions to Afghanistan, Honduras, Kosovo and Venezuela. Currently, (December 2002), our team is in Costa Rica assisting local humane societies devastated by recent flooding. Another key area of WSPA’s work has been the introduction of animal welfare principles into regions where they were previously underdeveloped or non-existent. In Turkey, we have eradicated “bear dancing,” a cruel, tourist-driven industry. Only a few years ago, young cubs were commonly stolen from the wild, de-toothed, de-clawed and forced to “dance” on the streets. WSPA orchestrated a public awareness campaign and built a sanctuary for bears that could not returned to the wild. The sanctuary is now home to 43 “retired” dancing bears. WSPA is the world’s largest network of animal protection specialists, having a membership of over 434 animal protection societies in 102 countries.
