Detailed Description: RI’s timely and effective communication of the plight of victims in humanitarian emergencies has earned RI an international reputation and has led to the amelioration of human suffering. We monitor humanitarian and human rights crises worldwide, analyze these crises, and then present practical, action-oriented solutions that benefit refugees and other displaced people to governments, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the media.

In the past year, we worked in Afghanistan, the Great Lakes region of Africa, West Africa, Southern Africa, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Angola, Guatemala, Colombia, the Balkans, Lebanon, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Uganda, the Thai-Burmese border, and the Caucasus.

Examples of our most recent work include the following:

Our September assessment mission to the Thai-Burmese border chronicled pervasive rape of ethnic women from Burma's border states by members of the Burmese military. In response to our report, the UN's Special Representative to Burma has agreed to raise the rape issue with the Burmese government.

In Sri Lanka, our advocacy led the U.S. to agree to fund mine clearance in war-torn areas throughout the northern region of the country. With peace negotiations underway and a ceasefire holding, this will enable thousands of people to return home.

After an assessment mission to Angola, the RI team returned and presented their findings and recommendations in Washington, DC. Our bulletin report, "The Next War in Angola: Combating HIV/AIDS" was produced to draw attention to and strengthen responses in reproductive health. As a result of this bulletin, RI was asked to participate in a congressional briefing on Reproductive Health in Angola sponsored by Rep. Carolyn Maloney and report to the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Health on HIV/AIDS. Our bulletin was also forwarded to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and in turn the foundation devoted 7 million dollars to fund HIV/AIDS projects in Angola.
