Detailed Description: Organizational Profile:

The Center for Health and Development, Inc. (CHD), is a Boston-based private non-profit organization that was established under Chapter 180 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in September 1987. CHD is a tax-exempt organization designated as such under Section 501(c)(3) of the Tax Codes of the United States Internal Revenue Service.

CHD provides an array of community-based mental and public health activities and services that include day rehabilitation facilities, residences and vocationally-oriented locally supported clubhouses and related programs for youth, adults, and families in 68 cities and towns throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

CHD provides housing services for adult consumers referred by the Department of Mental Health in four (4) regions of the Commonwealth. Through our Fitchburg, Leominster, and Winchendon programs our residential service programs are transitional with the goal of helping consumers gain the skills and confidence needed to move to a more independent setting in the community. Individuals participate in all aspects of the residential setting, including individual treatment planning, rehab interventions, house meetings, household chores and food preparation. In Winchendon, CHD provides support for dual diagnosed consumers dealing with both mental illness and substance abuse.

In Framingham, we provide supported living assistance for consumers. Consumers live on-site in individual studio apartments, or in section eight apartments throughout the town. This program provides specialized support for deaf/deaf-blind consumers.

In Wakefield, CHD operates a transitional residence for consumers as well as support services for apartment living for other consumers.

In Weymouth, we provide community-based support services for consumers living in apartments. Through our clubhouses, located in Quincy and Wakefield, CHD assists consumers with other housing needs such as housing search and first-time home-ownership opportunities.

CHD has a commitment to a model of psycho-social rehabilitation that guides our staff and informs our work with consumers. Individual goals are developed to assist individuals in developing skills for stable, safe, and satisfying lives in the community. Individuals practice everyday life skills, learn to manage their psychiatric illness, and work to become involved in their community. Goals promote improved functioning and well being in the residential setting while preparing to move to a more independent setting within the community.

Through our Atlantic Clubhouse program in Quincy, CHD serves elderly adults with serious mental illnesses. The Mecurio Senior Center is located within the Atlantic Clubhouse, and serves adults 55 years and older who are diagnosed with a severe and persistent mental illness, but who are not interested in furthering their education or seeking employment any longer. Much of the programming in the Senior Center is social in nature, and the older adults enjoy reading the newspaper and discussing current events, field trips to specific stores or activities, potting plants, viewing movies together, conducting bake sales in order to raise funds for special trips and activities, and a number of other activities. These older individuals bring a richness and wealth of knowledge and experience to the Atlantic House program.

CHD conducts forensic evaluations to assist 13 District and Superior Courts, the state psychiatric hospitals, the state Probation Department, and the local Sheriff’s Office of the major cities in Central Massachusetts on mental health competency matters.

CHD’s Public Health initiatives include: (1) coordinating and providing logistical support for the Region I Women’s Health Conference for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; (2) providing training and technical support for the Massachusetts Needle Exchange Program; (3) evaluating training activities supported by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Division of HIV / AIDS – Massachusetts Prevention Planning Group; and (4) coordinating the exchange of pertinent information among the six (6) New England state Women’s Health Coordinators.
