Clothing, household items and furniture we receive are given free to the needy, abused, battered and homeless. Crisis helps meet bills, food, diapers, heating needs. Allegheny County in North Carolina is the fifth smallest county in the state. Our population is 10,763 The county's current statistics show 20.1 % of the population living in poverty and 25.3% of our children live in poverty. The population is approximately 95.7% White, 5% Hispanic, and 1.2% Black. During the past 5 years 6 of our industries have closed leaving many unemployed and without health insurance. Cora's Charities, Inc., hereafter called the mission, distributes donated clothing, household items, & furniture, etc. to the needy free of charge. Cora Neville, 68, began this mission 29 years ago and still operates and runs the mission. There is no Red Cross or Salvation Army here and we are the only source for local assistance. The Sheriff's department and the department of Social Services refer people to us for help. Families who have lost their homes due to fire, flood, & abuse come to us to start over. Stranded travelers, electric shut offs, heating oil, diapers, formula, medicine, & food are a handful of the emergencies that we address. These people come to us after government resources have been exhausted. We assist these people from our Crisis Fund. During the past 5 years our time open to the public has been very limited. In June of 2000 we voluntarily closed when the building inspector deemed the building we had just moved into was unfit. Therefore we are only able to distribute the items a handful at a time. On the average we receive one pick-up truck everyday. The inventory is just stockpiling. Our volunteers are unable to work due to the lack of electricity, water & heat at our locations. Cora works all winter wearing five layers of clothes to keep warm. We currently occupy 3 large school buildings one of them has 26+ rooms that are filling up floor to ceiling with items received. By reducing the inventory surplus we would be able to manage what comes in daily and get the items out to the public. In addition to our usual volunteers, the court system sends us people who are required to do community service work. Since donations are short due to not being able to open, Cora works a part time job just to keep the ministry running after working 40+ hours a week at the mission. The way the mission is operating now we are unable to provide for the people in need. A lot of people in our area are either out of work or work 2 jobs to make ends meet. Future Goals are to effectively counsel people, to have a Soup Kitchen, to have a Homeless Shelter, to have an Abuse Center and to offer training for budgeting money, training for reading and writing, training for self confidence & self worth. We shipped 400 boxes to the homeless in Winston-Salem and in Greensboro, NC and items to the Honduras and clothing to aid the flood victims on the eastern shore three times. We also ship out our excess to economically depressed areas of VA, West Virginia, Tennessee, & Kentucky. | |
