School on Wheels helps homeless children get back to and stay within the mainstream education system, and we give them the constancy of people who believe in them and are concerned about their welfare and education. WHO IS A HOMELESS CHILD? Simply put, the child of a homeless adult. They live on the street, in a car, in a motel, in a series of shelters. They move frequently, from place to place and from school to school. Often they miss school entirely for extended periods. Sadly, these children often become accustomed to failure in the classroom by starting off each day with no homework completed (they had no paper or pencils, they could not concentrate in the middle of the shelter hall…), or not understanding what a teacher is saying or how she/he is teaching (they have been exposed to so many different curricula and methods of doing things, they have missed the days where basic concepts were explained). Even when the children manage to stay in school, the stress of their unstable situation makes it difficult to concentrate on their studies and maintain their grades. WHAT WE DO Our goal is to shrink the gaps in the education of these children by giving them hope, consistency, and empowerment. We get them back in school, help them navigate the maze that enrollment can present (forms, lost records), we provide them with uniforms, backpacks and school supplies. But the real heart of the School on Wheels programs is our army of volunteer tutors. These heroes give their time, talents and support to the educational needs of homeless children struggling daily to accomplish their number one job as a child - learning. Volunteer tutors come from many different backgrounds but they all have made the commitment to give one hour a week to improve the lives of a homeless child. School on Wheels’ tutors work in more than 60 shelters, transitional homes, hotels, and other locations around Los Angeles, as well as in Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, the South Bay, and Pomona. We also have a chapter in Indiana and expect to soon have one in Washington D.C. If we had enough volunteers, we would be everywhere we were needed.
