Summit's mission is to empower people and animals to greater heights. Assistance dogs empower people with disabilities to lead lives of greater independence by performing tasks that would otherwise require reliance on a human helper. These tasks might include retrieving needed objects, turning on/off lights, alerting a hearing impaired person to the sound an alarm or doorbell, etc. Perhaps more important than the tasks performed, however, is the relationship itself. Depression, loneliness and anxiety often accompany disabilities and it is the dogs capacity for unconditional love that is its greatest gift. Through partnership with an assistance dog, people often experience a joy and confidence previously unattainable through other means. Assistance dogs are empowered to greater heights by fulfilling their natural desire to be in a close, symbiotic relationship with mankind. People and dogs have formed mutually beneficial partnerships for thousands of years but few things elevate a dogs status more than aiding a person with a disability. Summit currently trains service dogs for people with mobility or psychiatric disabilities, hearing dogs for people with hearing disabilities and social/therapy dogs to be used in conjunction with a caregiver or healthcare professional to aid people in various therapeutic capacities. We also train companion dogs for medically fragile children. | |
