Detailed Description: The Lily Sanctuary, founded in 2003, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) exotic bird rescue group that specializes in the care of older and special needs birds. It was founded to honor Lily on her 13th birthday. She was diagnosed with the avian version of AIDS and told she should be put down. To this day she has tested negitive 2 times. She is truely the mericle girl that sparked the creation of The Lily Sanctuary.

The Lily Sanctuary, founded by Venette and Dan Hill, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) parrot rescue whose sole purpose is to provide quality care and love for homeless and “special needs” parrots.

Why a parrot rescue? Exotic birds are rare and expensive. Why wouldn’t a caretaker simply sell the bird and recoup some of their investment? Many do, but there are a myriad of reasons why people give up their companion birds—some by choice, some not. Under the best of circumstances, it is a heartbreaking decision.

Parrots are not only beautiful to look at and fun to converse with; they are highly sensitive and intelligent animals. Many prospective caretakers don’t realize that they are high-maintenance animals, or that their life expectancy can average 50-80 years, depending on the species.

Life changes—illness, death, divorce, new partners, moves, financial problems, or simply the inability to continue providing the necessary care—can cause a beloved avian companion to face a bleak and terrifying future. Often the caretakers cannot bear to “sell off” their bird; it’s their child, a member of the family, and once "ownership" changes they’re out of the picture forever. Their “child” could be sold 20 more times. That's where we step in.
