PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

A. PATIENT GRANT PROGRAM:

For 14 years, the Alabama Foundation For Oncology has provided financial assistance to cancer patients with critical needs like housing, food and utilities. All applications for assistance must be made through a social worker, oncology nurse or physician. It must be demonstrated that the patient is in need and specific needs must be identified. If a grant is approved, we pay bills directly, never to the patient. We provide assistance for patients at every major hospital in the Greater Birmingham area. Many of these patients are UAB, UAB Hospice and Children's Hospital patients. I mention this because these are large institutions and many assume that resources for patients within these systems would be widely available but that is just not the case. Patients are from Alabama and seeking treatment in Birmingham. Because of our size and ability to serve, we have focused our resources on working with Birmingham area physicians and social workers. Our patient assistance fund is a vital resource for cancer patients in need. We have worked hard to make our application and approval process as efficient as possible for medical professionals so that we can get patients help as quickly as possible. In addition to patient grants, we have collected and distributed Christmas presents for the children and families with children we have assisted with grants.

B. CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS

Camp Newsong - A grief camp for children who have lost a loved one to a terminal illness or tragedy. Junior League of Birmingham is our community sponsor.

Camp Newhope -A camp for children who have family members with cancer. Objective of this camp program will be to bring children affected by cancer in their family together, to honor their feelings and support them through this time of difficulty. Junior League of Birmingham is our community sponsor.

C. TOGETHER CANCER SUPPORT PROGRAM:

The TOGETHER Cancer Support Group is for cancer patients and their families, a support group newsletter, a resource library of cancer-related education and support materials and the TOGETHER Cancer Resource Guide. This program is free and open to the public. Each group is facilitated by professional counselors or clergy. The TOGETHER group includes all types of cancer. Educating patients and families members about cancer is an important aspect of the support group program, as well as providing a supportive environment to share feelings and learn coping skills.
