Pyramid Autism Center is a California Department of Education State Certified Non-public, Non-profit School dedicated to serve the needs of children and families touched by autism. Autism is the third most prevalent developmental disability in the United States, affecting over 500,000 individuals. In Southern California alone there are over 2,000 children diagnosed with autism. A recent study suggested that autism cases in California nearly doubled over the past four years impacting more than 20,000 individuals. More so than ever – organizations like Pyramid Autism Center are becoming critical to support this devastating disorder that is more prominent than almost all disabilities. Our impact on the community is unique as it is the only program of its kind in Southern California. Our focus on both classroom education and community support is considered to be a “leading edge model” for service delivery. We are fortunate to have Dr. Andrew Bondy, one of the world's most respected experts in autism education, as the CEO of Pyramid Autism Center’s Board of Directors on a 100% pro-bono basis. In 2004 – PAC continues to be recognized as one of the leading programs in the US – which is a significant achievement given our relatively limited history. The full year nature of our school program is both innovative and unique (this service is currently not available to special education students in California) and offers a specialized curriculum that incorporates speech therapy, occupational therapy, and adaptive physical education. Not only does this model benefit students educationally – but it also relieves a significant financial and emotional burden for parents who have limited coverage options for their children when school is not in session. Pyramid Autism Center’s Program Director holds a Master’s Degree in Special Education and has over ten years of experience in the field of autism. She began working at the Delaware Autistic Program under Dr. Andrew Bondy in 1994 as a paraprofessional while working on her degree. While teaching in 1998 she was offered a teaching position at a new program in California by Dr. Andrew Bondy, Lori Frost, and Scott Haug. In November of 1998 she moved to California to help start the Pyramid Autism Center. After teaching at Pyramid for three years she became the Program’s Director. | |
