The mission of the National Health Care for the Homeless Council is to help bring about reform of the health care system to best serve the needs of people who are homeless, to work in alliance with others whose broader purpose is to eliminate homelessness, and to provide support to Council members. Programs The National Health Care for the Homeless Council engages in a broad variety of advocacy and training activities including conferences and seminars, publications, and direct technical assistance. An annual HCH Policy Symposium and frequent action alerts help to implement an aggressive policy agenda that is revised annually. Training activities are directed to local HCH providers, other agencies that provide services, and to homeless people themselves. Publications include the definitive "Organizing Health Services for Homeless People: A Practical Guide" and numerous monographs, clinical guidance, training curricula, policy analyses, and newsletters. Current research activities include examinations of Hepatitis among homeless people and an evaluation of recuperative care facilities serving homeless people. Additional Comments from the Organization From 1987 through 1999, the National HCH Council was the national beneficiary of funds raised by the comedians' telethon Comic Relief, starring Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams. Comic Relief telethons no longer occur, and the National Council's advocacy work is now supported solely by membership dues and private donations. | |
