A Testimonial From A 'CHARITY CARS' Hurricane Katrina Recipient
Charity Cars & Hurricane Katrina
Recently my life hit a low. My family and I lived in St. Bernard, Louisiana which was one of the worst hit areas of Hurricane Katrina. We lost everything: our house, car, clothes, pictures, and sadly even my Grandmother. I thought to myself, "Where do I go from here?" Fortunately, my husband is strong and he put my daughter and I on a plane for California, away from the disaster, danger and ongoing chaos. Once we arrived, we discovered it was going to be alot harder to start over without transportation. Every day, it took my husband 3 busses to get to and from work. Going to the grocery store was impossible, especially with the constant need to buy baby food and other daily items a newborn needs.
But luckily our case worker who was helping multiple Katrina vicitims, heard about a non-profit organization called Charity Cars and what they were doing to help the families of Hurricane Katrina. We filled out the application but never really thought we would actually get chosen. One afternoon my husband called and said we have been picked to get a donated car. I started crying. I couldn't believe it. Every thing that had gone wrong was about to change. My husband and I can say we never really owned great cars, they were the type that just got you from point A to point B. The car that was donated to us was something we only dreamed of having but couldn't afford. Not only did the people at Charity Cars fulfill our hopes, they gave us our lives back so we can rebuild our future. And for this we cannot thank them enough!
Sincerely,
Jennifer and Eddie (& daughter)

Dear Charity Cars:
Charity Cars has made it possible for me to remain a productive member of society. Years ago, I was a welfare mom struggling to make ends meet while going to college full-time. After I finished my 2 year degree I went back into the workforce. With the help of a friend, I managed to buy a little car that was inexpensive and already 12 years old. The little car remained a faithful commuter for almost 10 years.
I have gone from living in bad neighborhoods in Los Angeles to a lower-middle class neighborhood in Orange County, California where the schools are better and crime is lower. However, the price I have to pay to live in a neighborhood that is not a slum means that my daughter and I live paycheck to paycheck. Any emergency throws our budget into the red. Our little commuter car gradually needed more and more maintenance that I could not afford.
My daughter attends school in a nice middle class suburban neighborhood near my work. I drive her to school every morning, take my lunch break to pick her up in the afternoon and then drop her off at the neighborhood library to do homework after school. I return to work for an additional 2 hours, then pick her up after work. We then have a one hour commute home in rush hour traffic. Without a car, my daughter would have to attend school in the neighborhood where we live and gang activity is prevalent at that school.
Public transportation is sporadic in Orange County, California and the user must be prepared to walk great distances between bus lines. They must also be prepared to change buses often if going more than 5 miles. In addition, the amount of time it would take to go the 11 miles from my home to my workplace on a bus in the morning would be more than 2 hours and literally impossible time-wise to escort my daughter safely to school, to the library and back home.
Earlier this year our little commuter car started to have severe mechanical and safety issues and recently died shortly before the end of the school year. We had no money for another car nor did we have the funds to pay for the extensive work the 21 year old car required. Luckily there was only a month of school left and friends and co-workers helped drive us around. After the school year ended, I rode to work with a co-worker for about a month when she was available, but I also missed many days of work. My boss was not happy about my missing so many work days and I was in danger of losing my job. Then our miracle happened...we received a vehicle from Charity Cars!
Our Charity Cars vehicle is only 6 years old. It's the newest car my daughter and I have ever had. It has features that actually work like the air conditioning and the defroster and doesn't leak in the rain. We will no longer be late for school or work, nor will we be embarrassed because of our clothes becoming soaked and filthy from the old leaking car. The vehicle from your program is a beautiful car, runs very well and feels extremely safe.
My daughter is no longer looking at the prospect of attending high school with gang members and I do not have to beg for rides from friends and co-workers. We can easily go to the laundrymat and the grocery store. I am not late for work because the car is so reliable. There was a very real possibility that without your assistance, I might have lost my job, thus putting us back on welfare and returning to a slum neighborhood. Charity Cars has saved our lives! We can never thank you enough!
Respectfully,
Rose G.

DISCLAIMER:
* Based on the fact that the vast majority of donated vehicles are not eligible to be 'program' cars (Charity Cars bases its decisions on many factors including, but not limited to, year, make, model, mileage, condition, location, recipient, repair and funding limitations.) and since placing a vehicle with a client is the exception rather than the rule, donors should assume that their vehicle will be sold at auction or for salvage with the proceeds returning to Charity Cars Inc. (unless notified in writing that their vehicle will be provided to a disadvantaged person). Although most of the vehicles donated are not of sufficient quality to be 'program' cars, Charity Cars appreciates each and every car donation as they all help to fulfill our missions!
