William Shatner's
14th Annual Hollywood Charity Horse Show
For the past thirteen years, William Shatner has spearheaded the Hollywood Charity Horse Show which features some of the best western reining riders in the country while simultaneously raising money for charity.
It was back in the late 1980s that Shatner first watched an exhibition by children who were so severely handicapped that some of them could not hold their head up, yet there they were going through intricate exercises on the back of a horse. The program was sponsored by Ahead With Horses, a therapeutic riding group for handicapped children. When the exhibition was over, Shatner sat, deeply affected by what he had seen. "You can't watch these kids without knowing you have to help, somehow." And so, in March of 1990 came the birth of the first Hollywood Charity Horse Show. Soon, other charities in need of help were added, small, grass root charities doing big time jobs.
Today, the Hollywood Charity Horse Show is an ongoing event. Taking place in early Spring, the HCHS brings together world-class reigning horses and riders, both professional and amateur in breathtaking slides and spins as they compete for top honors in their respective classes.
As many of you know, the Hollywood Charity Horse Show holds a very special place in Bill's heart. It embraces his love of horses and benefits three wonderful children's charities: Ahead With Horses, a therapeutic riding program for severely handicapped children; Tilden's Children, an acclaimed after school enrichment program in the Los Angeles area; and Camp Max Straus, a camp for underprivileged and socially challenged children where they have the opportunity to participate in numerous activities and programs.
The Hollywood Charity Horse Show benefits local children's charities including Ahead with Horses, Camp Max Straus and Tilden's Children.
- Ahead with Horses is an organization that works with severely handicapped children by using equine-therapy to help them learn to adjust to their difficult lives and learn to be more mobile. The story of these children, some of whom suffer from autism, and many who have such severe physical handicaps that they can't even walk, will inspire you.
- Camp Max Straus serves underprivileged children and provides them with development activities that they would not otherwise have access to.
- Tilden's Children provides assistance to homeless children and families. This day dedicated to them is a wonderful gift and a great opportunity to raise funds for their organizations.
Another great thing about the Hollywood Charity Horse Show is that every penny raised goes directly to the children. Mr. Shatner covers all of the administrative and entertainment costs himself.
Tickets on sale beginning March 1st.
