ABOUT

EJAF History
Established by Sir Elton John in 1992, the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) is one of the world's leading nonprofit organizations supporting innovative HIV/AIDS prevention education programs and direct care and support services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Since its founding, EJAF has raised over $125 million to support worthy programs in 55 countries around the globe. EJAF supports its work through proceeds from special events, cause-related marketing projects, and voluntary contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

EJAF reviews and awards grants to worthy projects worldwide and also participates in a partnership with the National AIDS Fund (NAF) to provide challenge grants to NAF member community organizations domestically that must be matched two to one as an incentive to leverage additional local support for their work from other sources.

EJAF focuses on supporting community-based prevention education programs, harm reduction programs, and direct services to persons living with HIV/AIDS, especially populations with special needs. These efforts include HIV/AIDS-related physical and mental health services, HIV testing and counseling, street outreach and education, food distribution, assisted living services, social service coordination, and community volunteer recruitment and support.

In 2005, the U.S. reached a new milestone in the HIV/AIDS epidemic - the number of Americans living with this disease topped 1 million. Worldwide last year, over 3.1 million people died from AIDS; over 570,000 of them were under the age of 15 - that's one child dying every minute. Clearly, current public and private sector prevention responses are inadequate to stop new HIV infections. More importantly, studies show that the epidemic is being driven by several key factors in core populations, which, if properly addressed, could significantly slow the spread of the disease. We need realistic, science-based approaches to HIV prevention, and we need them now.

Last year, EJAF conducted a strategic review of its grant-making programs and the status of the AIDS epidemic domestically and internationally. Armed with this data, EJAF is leading the way with new funding initiatives targeting HIV prevention in poor communities of the Southern U.S. and the Caribbean, among young people, among gay black men, among injection drug users, and among people newly released from prison. Because of EJAF's strong history and reputation as an HIV prevention grant-maker, the Foundation is uniquely able to leverage additional funding for the programs and organizations EJAF supports through its challenge-grant partnership with NAF.

Grant-Making Focus
Since its establishment in 1992 by founder and chairman Sir Elton John, EJAF has raised over $125 million to support HIV/AIDS prevention and service programs in 55 countries around the globe. EJAF focuses on supporting community-based HIV/AIDS prevention education programs, harm reduction programs, and direct services to persons living with HIV/AIDS, especially populations with special needs. Direct services include HIV/AIDS-related physical and mental health services, HIV testing and counseling, street outreach and education, assisted living services, social service coordination, and community volunteer recruitment and support.

In late 2005, EJAF completed a strategic review of its grant-making programs and the status of the AIDS epidemic domestically and internationally. Armed with this data, EJAF is pursuing new funding initiatives targeting HIV prevention in poor communities of the Southern U.S. and the Caribbean, among young people, among gay black men, among injection drug users, and among people who are incarcerated or newly released from prison.

Grant-Making Vehicles and Applications
I. EJAF Direct Grants: Nearly 50% of EJAF's grant-making is made through direct awards to worthy projects. U.S. domestic organizations and organizations located in Canada, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, may apply for an EJAF Direct Grant by mailing an executive summary, no more than two pages in length, of your organization's grant proposal to: Elton John AIDS Foundation, 75 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY 10011. Project summaries must be accompanied by your organization's 501(c)(3) determination letter and audited financial statements.

II. National AIDS Fund-eligible organizations: A significant portion of EJAF's grant-making for U.S. community-based organizations occurs via EJAF Challenge Grants awarded through the National AIDS Fund (NAF) and its Community Partnership network. Organizations receiving EJAF Challenge Grants must match these funds two-to-one as an incentive to leverage additional local support for their work from other sources. U.S. community-based organizations that operate in an NAF Community Partnership's city, state, or region are eligible to apply directly to Community Partnerships of the National AIDS Fund. Information on the NAF's 29 Community Partnerships, their grant-making priorities, and service areas can be accessed through the NAF's website at www.aidsfund.org.

III. Syringe Access Fund: The Syringe Access Fund is a multi-year grant-making initiative that strives to prevent HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C transmission by increasing access to sterile syringes. The Syringe Access Fund is a collaboration between the Levi Strauss Foundation, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Irene Diamond Fund, the National AIDS Fund, and Tides Foundation. Grants awarded through the Syringe Access Fund must support one of the following program areas: (1) state-level education and mobilization campaigns focusing on policy change; and (2) expanded access to clean syringes via syringe exchange programs (SEPs). Information on Syringe Access Fund grants can be accessed through the Tides Foundation website at www.tidesfoundation.org.

How does the Elton John AIDS Foundation raise money?
EJAF supports its work through proceeds from special events, cause-related marketing projects, and voluntary contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Since their founding by Sir Elton John in 1992 in the USA and in 1993 in the United Kingdom, the two charities have raised between them over $100 million to support worthy programs in 55 countries around the globe, making it one of the 20 largest private philanthropic HIV/AIDS grant-makers.

How does EJAF distribute the money it raises?
EJAF awards its grants via two different vehicles:
(1) Through a partnership with the National AIDS Fund (NAF), EJAF provides challenge grants to NAF member community organizations nationwide that must be matched two to one as an incentive to leverage additional local support for their work from other sources.
(2) EJAF also awards independent grants across North America and the Caribbean outside of the NAF system.

For international funding outside of these territories, please refer to www.ejafuk.com

What are EJAF's funding priorities?
EJAF funds HIV/AIDS prevention and service programs. In 2005, EJAF conducted a strategic review of its grant-making programs and the status of the AIDS epidemic domestically and internationally. Armed with this data, EJAF is poised to lead the way with new funding initiatives targeting HIV prevention in poor communities of the Southern U.S. and the Caribbean, among young people, among gay black men, among injection drug users, and among people newly released from prison.

What is EJAF's relationship with the National AIDS Fund?
In 1993, the Elton John AIDS Foundation established a grant-making collaboration with the National AIDS Fund in order to facilitate the most cost-effective distribution of grants to communities and populations most impacted by HIV/AIDS. Through this partnership, EJAF provides challenge grants to the National AIDS Fund's expanding network of HIV prevention and core programs in local Community Partnerships nationwide. These grants are used by Community Partnerships to leverage an additional $2 locally for every $1 provided by EJAF.

How do I apply for an independent grant?
a) If you are located in one of the National AIDS Fund's 29 Community Partnerships regions, please go here for information regarding submitting a grant proposal.
b) If your organization is not located in one of NAF's Community Partnerships, you may submit a grant proposal to EJAF. Please note that EJAF focuses on supporting community-based prevention education programs, harm reduction programs, and direct services to persons living with HIV/AIDS, especially populations with special needs. We do not fund research programs.
c) EJAF USA awards grants three times a year - in February, July, and October.

What is the difference between EJAF in the US and EJAF in the UK?
EJAF exists as two separate entities: one located in the United States (a 501(c)(3) organization) and the other in the United Kingdom (a registered charity). EJAF US and EJAF UK maintain distinct funding portfolios in order to maximize the impact of grant-making worldwide. The UK Foundation funds projects in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The US Foundation concentrates its funding in North America. For more information about EJAF UK please visit ejafuk.com.

Can I organize a fundraiser to benefit EJAF?
Yes, please contact us to arrange to submit a project proposal.

How do I learn about upcoming EJAF benefits?
a) For US-based events, please check the events section of this website.
b) For UK and international events, please contact fundraising@ejafuk.com

Does EJAF utilize volunteers?
EJAF enlists volunteers from partnering organizations for its major fundraisers.

I am individual with HIV, can EJAF support me?
