Governor Riley Announces Emergency Relief Fund for Hurricane Katrina Victims

MONTGOMERY – Governor Bob Riley today announced that he has created the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund to help meet the needs of Alabama citizens who are not covered by insurance or Federal Emergency Management Agency claims resulting from a disaster or emergency.

“Public assistance and insurance go a long way in helping victims recover after a disaster, however people often have needs that are not met by these resources,” Governor Riley said. “This fund will help give citizens the extra help they need to get their lives back to normal and cover unmet costs.”

Grants from the fund will be awarded by a committee comprised of members from the United Way of Alabama, Alabama Emergency Management Agency, Alabama Department of Human Resources, county long term recovery experts and a representative from the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.

Modeled after similar funds created by the states of North Carolina and Florida, the fund will be managed by the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and the United Way of Alabama will serve as the fiscal agent.

Contributors may send checks made payable to the “Alabama Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund” to:

web: http://www.katrinahousing.org/

KatrinaHousing.org is a non-profit project formed specifically to enable the thousands of volunteers who have stepped up to assist the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. It is a housing services hub for Katrina victims.

After Hurricane Katrina hit, multiple sites popped up on the Internet asking people to donate long and short-term housing for survivors. KatrinaHousing.org was one of these and continues to be in operation. The project offers information on housing space for victims, or hurricane survivors can search for available rooms/houses/apts/etc. This project is working in cooperation with other support organizations.

KatrinaHousing.org has already played an important part in the hurricane relief effort and is seeking to increase its ability to help in the immediate situation and in future disasters. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit project of the National Heritage Foundation and shares its federal tax status (Tax Identification Number 58-2085326.)

What can people do to help?

If anyone has a room they can share or if they have a rental home or apartment that is available, please list it on our site. If the rental price is discounted, you are willing to do a month-to-month contract or waive the deposit or application fee, or you accept city housing voucher for a hurricane victim, please include this information in your listing.

Best Friends Animal Society Works All Year Round

Best Friends is working with you -- and with humane groups all across the country -- to bring about a time when there are No More Homeless Pets.

The sanctuary, at the heart of Southern Utah's Golden Circle of national parks, is home, on any given day, to about 1,500 dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and other animals.

In our home state, Best Friends manages a model No More Homeless Pets campaign with shelters and humane groups statewide to ensure that every healthy dog or cat that's ever born can be guaranteed a loving home.

And Best Friends reaches across the nation, helping humane groups, individual people, and entire communities to set up spay/neuter, shelter, foster, and adoption programs in their own neighborhoods, cities, and states.

The mission of Best Friends is driven by the simple philosophy that kindness to animals helps build a better world for all of us. And the work of Best Friends is supported entirely through the donations of our members and supporters. Through the generous hearts and hands of people like you, we can ensure that animals who come into the care of Best Friends will never again be alone, hungry, sick, afraid, or in pain.

Best Friends Animal Society is a 501.C.3 Corporation. Tax I.D. # 23-7147797
