During the remaining 3 months of 2005, Charity.com will be doing something a little different than our normal Charity of the Month feature. Each month we will spotlight 3 different organizations relating to the relief efforts of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. It is our hope that this expanded approach will provide information that everyone can utilize for their own donation, volunteering or informative needs.

The Humane Society of South Mississippi

The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) is a non-profit, charitable organization. Their mission is to protect the animals of South Mississippi through sheltering and innovative spay/neuter, adoption and health programs. The HSSM’s shelter and operational capabilities were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, however, they somehow were able to save over 120 of the animals that survived and their staff and volunteers have contributed significantly to the relief efforts in Louisiana as well. Help make their shelter operational again, so they can service the homeless animals of our community once the disaster relief runs out.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF The Humane Society of South Mississippi

As you may already know our shelter was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Our immediate needs are being taken care of by HSUS, Project Halo and animal control officers from around the SE region.

They are currently taking all of the animals we receive to Hattiesburg where the strays are being held for a minimum of 30 days. If you have a rescue group or would be able to place some of these animals, please call 888-722-3106. There is a huge need for assistance at the end of the holding period to place these precious animals in homes where they will be loved and cared for. If you can assist in this fashion, please call the number above and register.

VMAT is being demobilized today. I was notified of the order yesterday. We are in desperate need of veterinarians and vet techs to volunteer here in Gulfport to attend to the animals that are coming to us. We are sheltering more than 100 animals at this time, most of which require medical attention and care.

Please email me names, contact info and dates of availability on anyone who can help care for these abandoned animals. We are going to need help for at least the next two months.

If you would like to help, but are not currently a licensed veterinarian or vet tech, please contact Dr. Carla Huston, DVM, and she will get you accredited. She has assured me that process is quick and painless.

I am writing to ask you for your help to make our shelter operational again, so we can service the homeless animals of our community once the disaster relief runs out. As I mentioned above, our shelter was devastated. Our building took 4′ of water and our vehicles were totaled. I have put together a list of things we lost and will need to become operational. The list is extensive and runs the gamut from pickup trucks to cotton swabs. Please help however you can.

I sat down and cried when I first laid eyes on our shelter and saw our staff with no water and no electricity working to shovel through the debris, while they cared for the 120 animals that survived. I am here to tell you that the people that care for our homeless animals have inspired me! They were driving to the shelter to make sure these animals had care when they didn’t know if they had enough gas to get back home.

Please forward this list to anyone who could be of assistance . We are a non-profit so I will be happy to provide a tax ID number to any donor who requests it.
