EMINENT DOMAIN
"…there remains the broader issue of why government planners should be empowered to dispossess people in the name of urban renewal. Where the government sees ‘blight,’ its victims see their homes, their hard work, their livelihoods and their dreams." - Reason Senior Editor Jacob Sullum in his nationally syndicated column
Stopping Eminent Domain Abuse
Reason outlines legislation to protect homes, small businesses
Since the Supreme Court failed to defend personal property rights in its Kelo v. New London decision, Reason Foundation has been working with government officials to halt eminent domain abuse. Reason's model legislation shows how your elected officials can pass laws to protect the rights of homeowners and small business owners.

Eminent domain is government-sanctioned bullying
By Matt Welch
… "It's like undermining motherhood and apple pie," Waters told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I mean, people's homes and their land — it's very important, and it should be protected by government, not taken for somebody else's private use." … In other words, the government won't take your property unless you refuse to sell. How comforting.

The Supreme Court decides property rights aren't rights after all
By Samuel R. Staley, Ph.D.
You may think your home is your castle, but the Supreme Court decided it is just on loan from your friendly local government. The government can now bulldoze your home anytime it wants as long as the legally-required number of public hearings are held and politicians have some semblance of a plan for economic development on your land.

Thank you for your interest in Reason.
You and I face the problem of an ever expanding and intrusive state. Big Government sticks its hands in our pockets, its eyes in our bedrooms, and nose in our checked-baggage.
We have to do more than grit our teeth. We have to fight back.
Your tax-deductible support of Reason Foundation makes you are a partner in the fight for liberty. Thanks to the generous contributions of people like you, Reason is fighting back by changing minds and changing public policy through our award-winning journalism and policy research.
Reason advances a free society by developing, applying, and promoting the libertarian ideas of individual liberty, free markets, and the rule of law. We use journalism and public policy to influence the frameworks and actions of journalists, policymakers, and opinion leaders.
Reason works with legislators to develop market-oriented, performance-based solutions that make government more transparent and accountable. And in a world where most magazines sound alike, Reason magazine’s award-winning stories, insightful commentary, and principled journalism sell the ideas of Free Minds and Free Markets to a national audience.
We’ll keep you posted on our work through Reason Report, our donor newsletter; the latest publications from Reason authors, like our anthology Choice: the Best of Reason; and special insider mailings that tell you all about the work we're doing. And if you contribute $1,000, you’ll become a member of our Torchbearer Society and receive an invitation to Reason Weekend, our exclusive 3-day annual retreat; a complimentary subscription to Reason magazine; and special recognition in an issue of Reason magazine.
Please help Reason fight against intrusive government, bad regulations, and higher taxes. Stand with us as we celebrate the power of the free market and show that private enterprise can succeed where government has failed.
Thank you for helping us hold the torch of liberty aloft.
Sincerely,
David Nott

"Of all the nation's conservative or free-market policy groups, it may be the most libertarian among them, the Reason Foundation in Southern California, that ends up having the most direct impact on the actual functioning of government."
