Salvation Army Continues With One of Largest Relief Efforts in History
Monetary Donations Sought to Provide Food and Water to Hurricane Victims
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (September 3, 2005) – The Salvation Army continues to help bring aid and comfort to those affected by Hurricane Katrina, launching one of the largest emergency disaster services relief efforts in the organization’s 125-year history. Mobile kitchens and canteens serving in the Gulf Coast region are focused on providing the most precious commodities needed right now – food and water.
“The victims just want basic life sustenance. They’re in shock. Everything they’ve worked for all of their lives is gone,” said Major Dalton Cunningham, divisional commander for The Salvation Army in the Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi Division.
The region-wide gasoline shortage has created a crisis of its own. “Our canteens are providing much needed food and water to the victims, but we’re running out of gas and there simply is just no gas available south of Hattiesburg, Mississippi,” Cunningham said.
Relief efforts are extending throughout the entire southeastern United States. More than 150,000 Katrina refugees are receiving shelter, food and water at Salvation Army facilities from Texas to North Carolina. The mobile kitchens are capable of serving more than 500,000 meals per day.
“We ask that everyone everywhere pray for vision and wisdom for us to serve people the way God wants us to serve them, that the resources and people will be available, and that we can get into the affected areas to serve,” Cunningham said. “This is going to be the largest response to a disaster in our history.”
The Salvation Army asks people who want to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina to visit www.salvationarmyusa.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY or visit any Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club. Monetary donations are needed to meet the victims’ most immediate needs. A $100 donation will feed a family of four for two days, provide two cases of drinking water and one household cleanup kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies.

New Orleans – Twenty-two mobile canteens are serving in locations throughout south Louisiana. As of Friday afternoon, rescue teams have evacuated the hundreds of people who took refuge at The Salvation Army Area Command who had been stranded in that facility since Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Monday.

Montgomery, Ala. – Continuing to feed at the local shelter
Huntsville, Ala. – Providing food boxes and cleanup kits to local residents
Florence, Ala. – Supplying victims with clothing
Dothan, Ala. – Supplying victims with clothing and blankets
Birmingham, Ala. – Doing localized feeding
Anniston, Ala. – Providing clothing for evacuees; military base has been offered as a possible warehousing location
Columbus, Miss. – Continuing with local feeding; a request has been made by the state to open a shelter in Clay County.
Gulf Coast, Miss. -- Fifteen canteens are serving near the coast, but additional canteens are needed inland. Small towns inland need food and water.
The state of Mississippi has decided to move the State EOC to the Imperial Palace Casino on the coast sometime this weekend. The Salvation Army in cooperation with the state is looking to open shelters for storm refugees who have nowhere to go.
TEXAS
Salvation Army facilities all along the Louisiana-Texas border are being utilized for shelter for those who are displaced from the storm. Canteen units that were not sent to the disaster site are now being mobilized in Texas to operate feeding sites at those shelters.
The Houston Astrodome has been designated as a shelter and The Salvation Army is working with local officials to assist with pastoral care. A call for Salvation Army officers to serve in this capacity is being made throughout the nation
GEORGIA
Salvation Army offices are handling requests from victims needing assistance at locations in Atlanta and Lawrenceville. Other corps in the division are also prepared to handle requests from hurricane victims. Plans are being put into place to open Camp Grandview, the divisional camp, as a shelter location for displaced residents of the affected areas.

FLORIDA
Florida corps are gearing up to handle social services cases and a number of people have called various Salvation Army locations through out the state seeking assistance. Many of these people have been staying with relatives who live in Florida.
Camp Keystone, Florida’s divisional camp was to open Friday to serve as a shelter location. It can house 300 residents, and trained social workers will be on duty to work with families in developing long term plans for recovery.

KENTUCKY-TENNESSEE
Shelters are being opened to assist hurricane victims. In Memphis, The Salvation Army is working with three other major agencies in a collaborative community effort. The Salvation Army is providing food to those being sheltered.
Camp Paradise Valley, The Salvation Army residential camp facility, is scheduled to open as an additional location for hurricane victims.

Salvation Army units in southern Arkansas are seeing an influx of people who have left Louisiana and are seeking shelter in their local shelters.

Due to the fact there are no facilities to store goods and the response is now a Federal Homeland Security event, individually donated goods would not be able to enter the disaster site without proper authorization from the government. Please do not endorse such drives in your community at this time. The Salvation Army is currently not seeking In Kind donations from the general public.
